Most of the world dresses its public school students in uniforms. This has several advantages: 1) It makes students feel they are part of a team, 2) Students who can't afford the latest styles don't feel inferior, 3) Students aren't distracted by others wearing inappropriate clothing.
However, American students have a different concept. School is their major social activity and almost the only time they have to show off their wardrobe. It's a real problem, but I tend to think we should be permitted to wear regular clothing, within community guidelines about dress codes.

oh god no! that is a way kids express them selves. teachers dont wear uniforms so why should kids? I still think that if a girl has her hands down to get thighs and her pants are longer then the finger tip then its okay to wear. when i was in 2nd grade they had a very strict dress code. - no open toe shoes, not tank tops, no shorts above the knee, things like that.

It is when the kids come to school not dressed properly or there is a distinction in some clothes showing how poor somoene is to how rich they are, in both cases causing problems, jealousy, teasing, etc.

I wore a uniform and I played the game by my own rules. If my parents pay a crap load of money to pay the teachers' salaries at private catholic schools, then I am going to wear it any way i want. ahh i miss those days.
