I'm trying to study for my Intro to Micro-Computer's test for on Tuesday, and I couldn't remember if an operating system is hardware or not. I do know, however, that Windows is an operating system. I guess I got confused from how my mom tried explaining to me the difference between hard and soft ware.

This was the question- Application Software includes all of the following except: This is where I marked Office 2000, and the answer was The operating system- because I know the operating system is software I got it wrong and now I'm wondering why- is it because you can't use to as an "application" ?

hardware is the metal and palsitc parts of the computer that you can actually touch. These are typically the proecssor (CPU), memory (RAM), video card, hard-drive, disk-drive, cd-rom/dvd-drive, even your monitor and printer are hardware.
Software is a program that runs on the hardware. It is basically instructions that the computer takes and passes to the hardware. Examples of softwar are Internet Explorer, Word, Excel, WinZip, even Windows.
Operating system is the part that sits between the hardware and software and connects the two toghether. Operating Systems are software, but they basically allow for other software to be written more simply and do the talking between the software and the hardware.
Example: Windows (OS) talks to the hardware (video card) and tells it to show the squares, text, boxes and pictues on your screen. This also allows internet explorer to tell Windows to draw what you are reading on the screen, Windows then tells the hardware.

You might have been think that between this two are seperated..and between this two are the hard or software? .so here... a windows xp, 98 2000, NT, are what we called the operating systems and its a software. As i can see, a very good comparing had been explain between the soft and hardware...gudluck

Think of it like this:
Hardware is stuff that you can touch(cd drive, mother board, power supply, hard drive...).
Software is stuff you can't touch(programs, operating systems...).
So an Operating System would be software, because you can't touch the Start menu or the desktop.(When I say you can't touch it, I am asuming that you know that a omputer monitor and storage devices aren't software...)

hardware - something you can physically touch and see.
software - programs that you use. While they may come on a CD that you can physically touch and see, they are not hardware by any means. An operating system is software.

the operating system is software. hardware is the components of the computer. the information stored on the computer is always the software.

ok, no the OS is on hardware. Think of it this way.. any part of a computer that you can physically touch is "hardware" (keyboard, mouse, speakers, hard drive, motherboard, sound card, video card) anything you load from a CD, DVD or other media is "Software" (windows, office, some game, some other game, works, money, etc.)

An operating system is like a keyboard, you plug it in on the back of the monitor and then it works.
