Confused, you be sure to go to college yourself, that will be the best way to encourage him. Even if he doesn't go to college at first, a few after high school jobs may do the job of convincing him.

Subtle hints: college brochures on your desk, conversations about all the possibilities for majors you are considering -but not too pointedly, of course. Write the academic counselors of the colleges you are thinking about for fliers on different majors, put them up in your bedroom. Again, just don't be overt. That's likely to just turn him off, and make him avoid you all together.

Well, just because he isn't planning now doesn't mean he won't. Some people don't go to college until they're 30.
Sometimes you just need to step back and let people see the reality. He probably really isn't thinking about how he is going to support himself as an adult,
On a personal note: I never went to college and I am able to support myself and live a comfortable life. Not going doesn't condemn you to a life of flipping burgers.

If he feels that he is not up to the college experience perhaps high school or night school that maybe a trade school. That way stable fields such as nursing are open to him, but it's not exactly college, a great compromise in most cases at least he's not in college as he wanted and he gets a better job than wal-mart or McDonalds as you wanted.

First of all, spell it correctly. Second, college isn't for everyone nor is it an obligation. But you could tell him that
it's different than high school, and it can enrich a person.
That many people have gone to college. Also that one down fall is, the cost to go to college keeps rising, yearly.
