I have not been able to find a point to life that has some permanence to it. I need there to be meaning that would last eternity. I refuse to submit to faith or organized religion ...I do not believe in an afterlife, although I am technically agnostic since I find it illogical to deny the slight possibility in a God ...I cannot prove nor disprove these theories.

The universe will either implode in on itself in the Big Crunch, eliminating all of reality forever...then in the overall scheme ...my life will not matter - neither will yours or anyone else's. It will be as if we never existed.

If the universe expands forever...eventually the stars will burn out ...and no life will exist.

We will die and will be forgotten...

I am not making a post for attention ...but I honestly feel as though life serves no purpose. It would be hypocritical of me to believe this while continuing to live ...

I am seriously contemplating suicide...
after all, what would it matter?

Go ahead...off yourself. You don't seem to want to live anyway. You have a big ego because you wonder if your death will matter. I really dispise people with large egos, so go ahead.

If you are gonna slice your wrists...do it UP and DOWN the arms...not side to side. The EMTs can stop the bleeding and you can be stiched up if you cut side to side. You want to slice the whole vein..about 6 inches long should do the trick.

Sleeping pills are for woosies. So if you want to be rememberd as a woosie take sleeping pills. Then you will amount to really nothing because you didn't even have the gonads to go out in style.

Now...if you really want to be remembered. Go down to the local gas station and douse yourself in 93 octane (hey, spend a little more on the good stuff if you are gonna kill yourself) and then walk out into the parking lot and light yourself on freakin' fire! That will rock...get someone to shoot the video and have them post it on YouTube tomorrow. I'd love to see that.

Have fun...don't hurt anyone else on your way out, and say hi to my Grandpa if you see him in heaven.

Good Luck!

Are you absolutely sure there is no point or purpose? By "finding it illogical to deny the slight possibility..." of anything is admitting possibility. Just because you haven't been able to find an answer, explanation or definition doesn't mean there isn't one; maybe it just isn't for us to know or know right now. What your beliefs are or aren't have nothing to do whether there is a purpose or meaning or not. Who made it your responsibility to solve the mysteries of the universe? Maybe you are just a link in the chain as well as the rest of us. You seem to be putting an awful lot of pressure on yourself; maybe you are just missing the whole purpose or meaning to live and letting it just pass you by. Try living life -- sometimes if you look at things from a different perspective they can open your eyes and you can see things more clearly. Focusing on death, finality and an absolute conclusion is no way to learn and discover about life. Try thinking outside the box; abstract instead of practical.

"I am seriously contemplating suicide... after all, what would it matter?"

This is an interesting dilemma you've gotten yourself into. One that many famous thinkers throughout history have fuddled around with. From a philosophical standpoint, it's a valid issue. Every time I drink too much tequila I ask myself that same question.

Is the purpose of life to be remembered? I hope not. If that's the case I better start carving my name into a shitload of trees.

Is the purpose of life to justify our existence to a higher being in order to gain a positive judgment? Again, I hope not, because every time my daughters bring home M&Ms I steal some when they're not looking.

So what is the purpose? I have my ideas. One thing I know is I won't be able to eat chocolate chip cookies when I'm dead. And I really enjoy chocolate chip cookies… especially when they're hot and the chocolate chips are melting… mmmm… that's good stuff. But enough of that, let's get back to you offing yourself.

You're obviously an intelligent person, and you know that your life is the only thing that truly belongs to you. You can give your soul to Jesus, Buddha, Allah or whomever floats your theological boat. You can give your heart to your spouse and your ***, of course, belongs to your parents – no matter how old you are. Still, your life is your own.

The catch is your decision will affect other people. There's no way around it. If you don't care how any one else feels then you're home free; you can be a bank robber, a murder, hell, the possibilities are endless… you could even be a politician. But I urge you to give serious thought before you become a politician.

If you care about anyone in your life then suicide isn't all it's cracked up to be. Kurt Vonnegut was a proponent of suicide. He tried for years to kill himself by smoking unfiltered Pall Mall cigarettes, he considered it the classy way to commit suicide. He passed away not too long ago at the age of 84. Amazingly he never got cancer. He did give a lot of people happiness.

Here was a man who didn't care for life. He thought life was "no way to treat an animal", yet he was the president of the Humanist society and one of the greatest writers of the 20th century.

Life is difficult. At times its down right shitty. But the point of life isn't what you get out of it or how humanity will pan out in thousands of years, it's what you do with the time you have.

That is the only thing any of us have control over.

I feel the same way. I actually go a step further and am atheistic. But agreed - there is no purpose to life. Why go through all the ****? I've struggled with this. I'd be lying if I didn't say I was suicidal as of right now, even. But here's what I know. Though there may be no point, and as intelligent individuals we can say we know this and see no reason then to live - take it down one notch. Think of all the good times you can have on this earth. Do they mean anything? No. What's the point then? It's fun. We have this time given to us - as randomly as it is. Make the best of it - no reason to cut it short either.

Okay, first off, disregard the Jesus Christ nuts, although from the sound of it, you seem fairly sane enough to do so anyways. in fact, you and I sound very much alike.

Now, there is a great Algerian philosopher named Albert Camus (he wrote The Stranger). The primary goal of ol' Al's musings was to find a reason NOT to commit suicide. He said himself that (paraphrasing) that the most crucial philosophical question to date was why one ought not kill oneself.

Basically, to sum up his ideas, he believed that in the end we are ****** and there's nothing we can do about. He compared humanity to Sisyphus, a Greek Titan who was condemned to push a boulder up a mountain for all of eternity, only to have it roll back down again.

Futility.

That's hard to come to grips with for smart, intectual beings like you and I who are not so easily swayed by the oblivion of religion. After all, there is a price to pay for biting the fruit of knowledge and that is realizing the utter ABSURDITY of the Universe, and mankind's vain attempts to construe reason and purpose from it.

So why? Why not just blow your head off? Well, believe it or not, I've been in your same predicament. I mean it seems logical; in the end, death is inevitable, so why bother? Well, according to Camus, giving in like that is just a cop out. The whole point of life is rebellion, rebellion in the face of the inevitable, whether it be through art or science or merely by flipping off your own gravestone.

You must become a Byronic hero, not an anti hero. Think of Lucifer in Paradise Lost. He was the epitome of rebellion in the face infallibility. He was well aware that he could never win against the almighty God, yet still, by manifesting his own tumultuous beliefs in to action, he revolted against a force that would some day over power and consume him.

See, death is your enemy, not your friend. And so too is tomorrow, because it always eventually brings death with it. So I say **** it, show the Universe that you AREN'T the same as it; indifferent and cold. Let it be known that despite what is emminent, you won't allow yourself to be subjected to a reasonless, meaningless world.

By killing yourself, you're just letting your body become another lifeless inanimate agent of the enemy. Strive for the reversion to Nothingness. Do everything in your power to bring about the Big Crunch as a big **** YOU to the Universe.

Or, then again, don't. Either way, the Universe doesn't care.

you say we will die and be forgotten, i to understand exactly what you are saying.

the purpose in life is to NOT BE FORGOTTEN.

so my point is to simply not be forgotten do something with your life that is so important that you will be worthy to be remembered

you say the universe will implode, but what you may not remember is that that has happened many times before it implodes into a small dot of pure matter the size that is smaller then an atom then it explodes producing the same universe that we are in now and all we are is in a loop that has happened many many times before.
so yes we will be forgotten but when we re loop do you really want to just keep killing yourself and being a nobody who kills himself looking for the same answer for eternity?

if god does exist and you do kill yourself then you just damned yourself to hell anyway so why not wait until you make a name for your self so your not forgotten and follow gods rules at the same time by not killing yourself?

so you make a name for your self and if he is real you get to spend eternity in pure happiness.

you kill yourself you garentee your no one will remember you.

suicide hurts

and you go strait to hell if he does exist
if he doesn't then you simply remember the last thing you where thinking when you took your last breath forever.

so live your life, your obviously intelligent and have learned something that often takes years for most people to understand and comprehend and with all the distractions in this world they often don't even realize they are wasting there life with boring everyday things like tv and computer games and movies. and dont have a goal that is worth putting effort towards to gain because it may get in the way of there incredibly boring lives.

and if none of that meant anything to you.

think about your family they are blinded by this dilution of pointless goals and god and religion. so if you kill your self they will blame them selfs. and putting them through that just is not worth it.
so don't take the easy way out and live your life at least your not one of the mindless meat bags that are distracted by meaningless entertainment. and have no idea how pointless there life is at least your smarter then 99% of the population and you ask questions instead of accepting what the authority tells you to believe.

if all else fails the universe created sex for the smart creatures that realized that there is no point.

SO GO GET SOME P*SSY!

Here is my idea on it all. You either live for something with passion and drive, or you die.

Follow your heart.

Whatever you do, do it because you have passion for it. Do not take the easy way out.

"but I honestly feel as though life serves no purpose."

What kind of purpose are you looking for?
Who are you trying to please?
What makes you feel alive?
What made your heart beat faster?

Follow your heart, and don't do anything on a whim, emotions are fickle...you may feel completely different tomorrow.

Humans, we are just so cute! Trying to figure this life all out...haha :)

Science has proven that you cannot produce something out of nothing. You need a creator. Similarly, when you die you will change into another form, your body, that is. However, your soul and spirit will either go to hell or heaven. 4 French scientists did an experiment to check whether there was hell or heaven many years ago. 2 died, 1 became mental and the other became a Christian. You kill yourself and I can BET you will not be able to come and tell me I am wrong!

It doesn't matter.

You COULD buy into the buy into the promises and fear tactics of religions to answer those questions that don't matter.

Or, go for the apathy route and quit caring about things that don't matter. Then life becomes just about the living.

Indulge in those things that put a smile on your face.

Mate, don't kill yourself. More to the point, I would seriously want to be in your position at the moment, just don't kill yourself. There's way more things in life to enjoy before quiting just yet. Just go wild! Do whatever you want to! You obviously don't care whether or not you die so why not go wild and do heaps of fun stuff and who cares if you get in trouble or it ends your life. I'm too much of a scaredy-cat to go too wild, so that's why I say I'd love to be in your position of not being afraid of death or what happens. Do everything that makes you happy! Have sex! Whatever! GO WILD!
