Penguins have thick layer of insulating feathers which are designed to keep them warm in water. Their feathers offer great insulation as they overlap like the shingles on a roof making them virtually waterproof.

The thick layer of blubber below their feathers also provide a protective envelope which help in minimizing heat loss to keep them warm.

Penguins are also able to control blood flow to their extremities, reducing the amount of blood which gets cold, but still keeping the extremities from freezing by maintaining a blood supply that keeps the feet temperature above freezing point.

In the intense Antarctic winter, some penguins would huddle together to keep warm and rotate position taking turns of at being on the cold edge.

They shunt (close off) the blood going to thier feet. That way it doesn't get into thier feet, which are sitting right on the ice, and get cold and then returns to the core of the body and drop thier core temp. By bypassing their feet... thier blood stays warmer. They also have a very think layer of fat which insulates them. So they can swim in the icy waters and still stay warm.. their feathers (which are more like fur in structure) are water proofed by oil covering them!

Few people know this, but I am more than happy to enlighten you. Penguins stay warm by dancing. They like to dance to electronica mostly.

You should see the documentary on penguins released last year. It had Morgan Freeman as narrator. I can't remember the name.

Fat, fat, and more fat. Hehe

Their feather act as insilation. The black feathers attract the sun and the black undercoat feathers keep the heat it. Black absorbs light and heat whereas light colours reflect. Their feathers are also not unlike a wet suit. It keeps them water proof. That is also why those little buggers can swim so fast =D they don't get wet under their feathers.
