No, existence and everything and everyone is NOT ultimately a hologram. This is a common belief, but wrong.
In fact, existence and everything and everyone is a computer simulation of a hologram.

You have been watching too much New Age pseudoscience pseudomysticism (Yeah, I say What the Bleep" and The Secret, too) and your question possibly is better answered in the religion or philosophy section that the physics section.
In Hindu philosophy (Vedanta) the phenomenological world is said to be an illusory projection of consciousness (not mind). It is illusory,in part, because its component parts are ephemeral (the come and go and transmute while existence and consciousness itself persists). This is where the New Age pseudo physics idea of the holographic universe comes from and is interpreted inaccurately--but it sounds good to people who don't understand what they are hearing.
People are not poor, old, hungry, thirsty, etc. because they have wrong beliefs about how the world works. They are so because we live in a dualistic, relational world where one thing is known through its complement or opposite and one condition is predicated on its complement or opposite. Also, the phenomenological world is a self-sustaining organism--it basically feeds on itself, which is why things are born, feed off each other one way or another (through actual consumption or else through exploitation) and die.

I'm glad someone has finally put into words the world as George W. Bush sees it.
But seriously, if that were true, what about people who are born wealthy, know nothing else and suddenly lose all their money? Did they just imagine losing all their money? People are poor because they are easier to control that way and the governments of the world take measures to keep them ignorant and poor. Why educate people when they may rise up and take your toys away? Why else would the make laws like No Child Left Behind, then not fund it enough to work?

No it's not a hologram. Nor is it a computer-generated dream. This is real. It is as bad as it seems and they are out to get you. Have a nice day.

It would be nice if belief DID affect reality. But, it does not. Reality IS what it IS. Your belief or lack thereof in it, affects it not one whit. :) So believe as you will, or don't. It won't do anything but alienate every person around you.
Peace!
