A question I've pondered frequently.
You have to dissasociate with the outside world first and foremost, because the outside world puts images, ideas, conflict of interests, and so many other things in our mind, that it takes the focus away from ourselves, and even if you do things FOR yourself in the world, they're usually selfish interests/gains, which don't really help you find yourself. Sounds cliche but looking inward is how you start.
You need to be still, have time for yourself, do alot of thinking. Lots and lots of it, be honest with yourself, and express that through your thoughts. You have to find yourself like that, and by avoiding toxic and non-influential environments, people, and ideas, you'll be fine.
Let's face it, thoughts like " i just gotta get that job promotion, do I look fat in this dress, what are they saying, wearing, thinking, is my car okay, is this okay is that okay, omigosh this omigosh that, am i smart enough , is this right enough, " all that comes with the OUTSIDE world, and doesn't help you find your true self.
You have to disconnect from that completely, to be at utter peace.
There IS a way to the madness. You can be in the most uncomfortable situations but if you're in touch with your true self, you can handle it all.
Start slow, be introverted to a degree, and honestly, get a really really good therapist. No joke, I have one and you need to do this, it's a life long process.

Try lots of different things. Find out what you enjoy and what you don't. Most importantly, walk your own path, not the path of a friend or the path of society... and if the path happens to meet with others, pick the route you think is best!
I know that was a kinda metaphorical explanation... but so was your question!

You can't find your true self by trying so hard. Just stop searching and live yourlife they way you want to, it is who you are not what you want to be, now that is your true self

you already know who you are. we all pretend that we need to find ourselves. but the truth is we just don't acceept what we are on the present. change is the only constant in this world so we people are a;so changing. we tent to change our selves whenever there's a lesson that teaches us life. what matter is what our life for? when do we want to dedicate it. is it to the world or to the glory of God? if we ans this question we can really say that we find our selves.

one way is you have to take time to yourself. you learn about yourself thru interactions with others, finding out what you like and don't like, but you also learn thru spending time alone, relying on yourself, finding out what you're capable of; too many folks go thru life just jumping from one (romantic) relationship to another, and never find out who they really are when they are not attached to someone else (this includes over dependence on friends and family as well). that's my theory. also try things. if you don't try, you won't know what you think of it. and lots of reading.
