What do you do when someone in your employ is giving it there all and falling way below the accepted standard? I hate being mean but I have someone that is putting forth huge effort and having less than satisfactory results. Am I wrong to terminate someone for being inept when they are seriously trying?

It is hard to find employees that will put forth a huge effort. Sometimes people are just not cut out for certain jobs. I would talk to the employee and be frank. Tell him/her just what you posted here and give them a chance to improve. If improvement is not likely then is there some other position to which this employee can be reassigned? A "hard worker" is worth keeping around. They are rare, like honest politicians.

It depends on the kind of work you are talking about. If people can be hurt or killed by this person's shortcomings, then by all means fire them. I wouldn't want an e.r. nurse who was "seriously trying." But if you are talking about a liquor store employee that stocks the vodka on the whiskey shelf over and over by accident, but is a very nice person who is great with the customers, then I would keep them. If they are losing your company money on a regular basis, and it's costing more to keep them than the good they are doing, then it might be time to let them go. It all depends on the situation.

Try to work with them and maybe find better more productive manners for them to progress more. Its hard to find good help and you might loose a good employee.
