There are a few things that are said to kill a vampire (I'm going by the folklore that started vampire stories) You can drive a stake through it's heart, burn it, or cut off it's head. Why that and nothing else? Not a clue, but I think one of the original ideas was that the stake would go through the body and pin the vampire to the ground, which evolved into stabbing its heart with a stake.
And to xcoreconquistador, Vlad the Impaler was not called that or linked to vampirism until many, many years after his death, after Brahm Stoker wrote his book.

One thing most vampire mythologies have in common is a thirst for blood. Also, vampires are symbolic of our desire to continue living even after death, and an easy way to symbolize this is to have the heart still beating despite the fact that the body is considered "dead".
The heart is the part of the body easiest to associate with both blood and life, so it stands to reason that destroying it would destroy the vampire. This also explains why wooden, rather than metal, weapons are required to kill vampires, as wood comes from something that used to be alive.

Which kind of vampire? European vampires are different than American vampires. Vampires have evolved from something dirty and foul into kinda cool. Check out the vampire you need to kill and you will find a way. New England has over twenty graves marked vampire and none were staked.

some people are idiots my friend
you are not one of them
some of your answerer's are though
the vampire myth came from Vlad the Impaler
Impaling meant sticking a stick into somebody
[x
the Romanians fancied that Vlad was a vampire,
for he drank the blood of his victims,
thus they said that the only way to kill him was to impale him,
like he did to others, for they could not kill him,
no matter how hard they tried,
eventually it got to stakes in the heart,
it is one of those,
change in a story through time deals.
nothing grand or special.

You'd be amazed at who a wooden stake [much less a stake made of any solid material] to the heart will kill...

I think the original idea was that you drove the stake all the way through the corpse and out the other side, pinning it down to its coffin so it couldn't rise up again.

The stake thru the heart signafies tying it down to the earth so it cannot arise( has to be driven thru the heart into the earth.

That's just to demonstrate to us mortals how truly difficult it is to kill those blood suckers. They wouldn't want it to look too easy!
