Keeping the masses ignorant of real issues and feeding them reel after reel of essentially worthless Hollywood type entertainment ensures that the population focuses on something other than what the government and big business are up to (too often not a lot of good for the average citizen, when they can get away with it).

Because the "newsies" are finally beginning to realize they are beyond their depth in reporting the news about the war and other international events. Few of them ever had the proper academic background during their university days to have any understanding of Islam, Salafism, Iraqi history,k etc. They can't even get it right when dealing with an event in another English-speaking country. A CNN anchor said that they were switching to their correspondent reporting on the APEC meeting in Sydney, the capital of Australia. Canberra is the capital! An AP reporter sent to cover the APEC summit filed a dispatch in which John Howard became the President of Australia. He's the Prime Minister! The American Broadcasting Company (ABC) showed video footage of Australia's Foreign Minister. The words below his face identified him as "Alexander Downey". His last name is Downer!
You really don't want these people to cover real news, do you?

Sorry, but they sell what people want to buy, just like any other business. Because of the money involved in advertising, there tends to be a regression towards the mean in what's available, so even with zillions of channels on your TV cable/satellite dish, the conservative nature of where the money's invested means you're not likely to have better news and analysis programs available for the niche market. The risks are just as great and the potential profits much more limited than with programs (and papers) aimed at a more general audience.

What can I say? It could be a number of reasons. Magazines sell more when there are scandalous stories to print [no matter how pointless and mediocre,] channels devoted to celebrities get watched more, etc...
It could also be a way of making people feel better about themselves. Look, here's this big, powerful person with a great voice, a nice body, just got married, who s rich, famous, and DUMB. [I was referring to Jessica Simpson a few years back if anyone missed it.] Celebrities might have everything but they might not have the brains to support themselves in case anything should happen if they lose their fame, and spend all their money. They'd be no better than the homeless people pushing shopping carts, collecting cans, whereas us normal folk would have an education behind us, common sense, and street smarts to pull us through.

Governments want to have people who don't really care about things other than what is shown to them on the tele.
This way they can pass laws that will help puppy dogs and put guns on the street in the same legislature.
It is the only way things are implemented, they take our money for taxes and spend it on things that we won't be able to understand because they feel it is for national security or something else.
If you are smart, you would know who shot JFK, area 51 is for real and the water is polluted.

Some think that the media focuses it's attention on the stories that Americans are most interested in - I tend to believe that Americans become interested in the stories the media provides us. I have zero interest in celebrity gossip - I have no idea why it dominates the headlines. Surely our nation is not THAT decadent?!
