I believe your problem stems from an incomplete uninstall of McAfee. If you are using Windows XP or Vista, the built in Windows firewall will automatically turn itself off if it detects the presence of another firewall. As a rule, only one firewall can be active. After you uninstalled McAfee, some trace files and registry keys were left behind. As a result, Windows thinks that the McAfee firewall is still installed and will refuse to turn on because of it. I recommend you use McAfee's own removal tool to completely remove any trace files. You can find it at (http://ts.mcafeehelp.com/displaydoc.asp?frames=1&docid=408302&CategoryId=107). Run the program and then try to turn on Windows firewall from the Security Center under Control Panel.

Try restarting your system. Most security suites will not get rid of all of the running files when you uninstall until you restart. After you restart try turning on the Windows firewall again. If it comes up you are good. You may also want to try Zone Alarm, very good fire wall and works well with AVG.

Was your firewall part of a Macaffee suite? Or are you speaking of another firewall, such as Zone Alarm or Windows Defender? If you had Macaffee suite installed and uninstalled it, that is the problem. You need to reinstall it and just disable the anti-virus portion of it. You cannot run two anti-virus programs at the same time. There will be conflicts.

Well, you might have conflicting firewalls. Your McAffee firewall might still be floating around in your computer's hard drive, and the AVG firewall might be conflicting with the McAffee firewall. Open Add/Remove programs (Start>Control Panel>Add/Remove programs) and then browse and see if you can find the McAffee firewall in the list. Uninstall, then get Spybot: Search and Destroy (it's free) to protect yourself from spyware. I hope that helps.

Good luck!!

Caution: You just told everyone!! You are a trusting soul!
And I am sorry, but I don't know how to do any of the behind the scenes stuff in a computer.
