It is right by my son's house and his friend just crossed that bridge and then it collapsed. Yes there were lots of survivors. Some amazing stories of rescuers.

Police estimate that 20 to 30 people were unaccounted for.
As many as 30 people were missing as the effort shifted from rescue to recovery. More than 60 people were injured and as many as 50 vehicles were in the river.There were 18 construction workers on the bridge at the time of the collapse.The Hennepin County Medical Center has reported that six people are dead and 38 people are injured.

Fewer than 20 is all I can recall. And that is a miracle, considering how many cars were on the bridge.

As for the cause, I have heard that pigeon poo on the bridge contributed to the rusting of the metal on the bridge. Guano has ammonia and salts that contribute to the corrosion process. Normal wear and tear also contributed to the bridge being rated as structually deficient.

I think 13 died. I spend time in Cape Cod over the summer and there are two young boys living in Hyannis, Cape Cod who lost their mother in the bridge collapse. She was going to school to make a better life for her and her kids while grandma was watching the children in Cape Cod. The two boys were absolutely devastated by their mother's death. It is so tragic. I pray for all the lost souls and their families.

14 died from instant impact on the concrete beams. 12 died from decapitation. 5 drowned inside their cars screaming for god to save them. 10 died from gunshot wounds from the mass hysteria, and I think 20 died from suffocating in the huddle of the dead from above. Wish I could have joined in on the fun.
