I think it just makes things akward. I'm not going out of my way to call myself Russian-Chinese American. I'm just plain old Asian to me.

As to my whole Russian-American thing, I think you're not really American unless you're a native American. They were here first.

I never thought about it much until my husband tried to get in a paid fire department. He was third from the top and they needed 3 guys. Well, according to the policy on equal opportunity, he and the other two top candidates were passed over because they had to hire a black, a Hispanic and a woman. Well, in a job where you life is dependent on another, you are not going to look at color or sex, you are going to look at the person as someone who can carry you out of that burning building. The other candidates who were hired were quite a ways down on that number list. So why did they even bother with the interviews and the physical agility testing? They could have just picked out the desired skin color and sex from a crowd.
So my husband is now a hyphenated American, Irish- America, whereas I'm a mutt. These African-Americans- are they sure there ancestors came from Africa? I mean just because they are black doesn't mean they came from Africa. I am white- where did I come from. My dad is Irish/English, my mother is from Germany. That makes me what? AN AMERICAN.
This racial stuff is way out of control. On an application, they ask if you are white or Hispanic or black. I think next time I will check off all of the above- let them figure it out. Most of America is all of the above. A little of this and a little of that.

"Politically correct" is actually a negative term. You will never see anyone say they believe in being "politically correct." They may believe in avoiding racist or offensive language, but they won't call it political correctness. That term was invented by people who oppose the idea, and therefore is always used in a negative context. I don't know what I call it, but if you want me to call you Asian, I will call you Asian. If someone prefers to be called Asian-American, I will call them that. I'm not worried about how anyone else talks, but I personally don't want to disrespect anyone.

Here's the deal; Liberals are politically correct, but only in public. Most of the rest of us aren't that gullible. PC is a lame attempt at speech and thought control and it works in public, but only in public!.

sbeboro put it well.
Also I'd like to say that there is a difference between being politically correct and just plain CORRECT. I would hope that people would be smart enough to not tack "PC" on everything that doesn't insult.

its a form of control. media, politicians and people with agenda come up with things like this to force others to conform to their thinking. its very effective. you stop yourself from saying or doing something not politically correct which you heard somewhere. its mind control.

Hi there

I think it has its place. Its just a shame that the politicians don't understand it! Maybe someone should try to explain it to them and tell them why it was introduced in the first place.

Best wishes

I think that political correctness has weakened society. Now, everyone feels like they are walking on egg shells every time they open their mouths to say something.

I don't really believe in it. It's just a load of unnecessary hastle. I don't really know who started it all either. We have to call 'black' people African-American and when do you ever hear them calling us 'Caucasian' - they just call us white. In Britain, it's them who come to our country and try and impose upon us their way of life, thus destroying ours. If they wanted to live their way of life and not be called 'black', why not just stay away.
