Due to the commonality of his last name, early on he decided to use his first name. When he came to North America, he had to get special pewrmission from MLB to use his first name on his jersey (MLB requires that when names are used, the player's surname is to be used).
So, rather than just be another 'Suzuki', he uses Ichiro

People do call him Ichiro Suzuki, but when he came into MLB he asked if he can have his first name on the back of his jersey because in Japan that's what they do. Daisuke Matsuzaka however decided to have his last name on the back of the road Sox jersey. It's just what Ichiro's choice to put his first name on the back of his jersey.

Because he is not go by his last name in the majors, the back of all his jerseys say Ichiro, rather than Suzuki.

becaused he used his 1st name in Japan as well since Suzuki is very common their like the user jeremy handcock already pointed out.

im not sure, but don't some Japanese spell their name, surname first? maybe Ichiro is his surname. sort of like Yao Ming. Yao is his surname, so he has Yao atop his #11 in his jersey.

"Suzuki" is an extremely common last name in Japan, so from his time there he has only used his first name.

ichiro is a popular name, so he goes by "Ichi" or "Ichiro" so Japs kno who the real ichi is
