Surprisingly, not many details are needed when I develop a character for stories. I start a file on each character and invent a rational profile of every detail of that person's life as possible. One day, just for fun, I opened files on several of my friends and described as many details as I knew about them and it's amazing how little we need to know about someone to get a pretty good picture of who they are.
