NO, all that will do is attract ants that may eat the seeds. Your watermelon will get sweet as it matures and ripens. Depending on your sweet tooth, you may want to check out different varieties for the sweetness that you prefer. Most people that like sweet things, I have experienced, are sweet themselves. Good luck in picking your favorite. ( I like Black Diamonds myself. )

if you want to make them sweeter, here is a trick that actually works and is old school..when the watermelon is growing, about half way through...take some sugar and water mixture, heavy string, or heavy sewing thread, needle and push the needle through the part that is next to the watermelon, the part that is attatched to the vine..be sure and put the ends into the water mixture...I have done this and it works...farmers that do this, know this trick..it's one that they use for personal watermelons, not the ones that will be sold...just makes them sweeter...of course they would be...and full of calories....

Calbee,
these people are clearly wrong. Of course soaking your watermelon seed with sugar before planting will make them grow sweeter. In addition I would, after soaking the seed in sugar water, cut the seed in half that way you will get a fully grown sweet watermelon with only half the normal seeds inside.
Dont be fooled by these nay sayers give it a try. Good Luck.
