We recently discussed Leona Helmsley's $12 million bequest for the care of her dog, "Trouble."

Most people believe that this amount of money for one small dog is excessive.

Animal protection groups are calling for Michael Vick to pay $10 million for the care and rehabilitation of the 53 dogs that were rescued from the dogfighting compound at his Virginia home.

Do you agree or disagree that this is excessive?

I agree and will carry this one farther...the the great discontent of many here, I am sure. In my heart, I feel there is NO place for pit bulls..especially pits that have been bred and trained as killer dogs. There is NO WAY of ever getting rid of this behavior, and I feel this way about the entire breed. We cannot ignore centuries of genetic traits chosen for this animal. Those who love their pit bulls are playing with a loaded gun that can to off and kill at any time. IF anyone has a pit bull and children in the same house, I hold this akin to child abuse of the most severe kind. Just two weeks ago, a pit, here in the area, never gave anyone any problems, attacked a mail man and tore his entire face off!!!!!!!! This happens all the time. How anyone can take a chance like this is beyond me.
NONE of these dogs should EVER be released to anyone...Vick's dogs can only be put down..sorry, folks, but if you disagree, then YOU volunteer to take one of the viscious animals into your home with YOUR children...just keep them away from me and my dogs, my friends, hell..keep them away from my enemies! Well, unless they are Yahoo trolls..no, strike that...It does NOT take 10 Million dollars to put down 53 dogs. And that is the only thing that can be done with these animals.
Again, I do not care who I have offended here with my remarks...Pit bulls are time bombs!

At the onset of a lawsuit, you have to ask at very high amounts, with the idea that you will to get something decent in dollar amount in the final settlement of your suit.
Nobody really expects to receive the whole amount they sue for.
It's a lawyer thing, if you ask for $10 mil, you might get $1 mil in the end. Also not generally known is that lawyers generally ask for 1/3 of your settlement amount (maybe more in large cases) before you even receive settlement monies at all. Not alot of people know that, nor are they allowed to discuss it in courtrooms before settlement amounts are reached.
I DO BELIEVE that Michael Vick should pay for the rehab of the animals he was torturing and abusing.

AND I think it's a sad thing that Leona Helmsley was such a shallow person that all she could think of to do was leave life changing amounts of money to take care of ONE DOG!

I agree with RoVale, that would be all of the dogs and their "natural life" time. Where do you really think this 10 million dollars really goes? The court system? They will probably put these poor dogs down, unless they select a care giver or several care givers. 53 dogs are alot of dogs who need individual attention.
At least with a penalty of 10 million, that may deter Vick from any more involvement into something as awful as this:~)

i agree with Goldwing - however i do think that the money could go to good use in many many humane societies and shelters all across the United States. as far as leona leaving $12 mil to her dogs, that is just down right silly. a reasonable amount is one thing, but there is no way it is going to cost that much to take care of that dog. that money should also be used to help animals in shelters
as you can tell - i am an animal lover

this is excessive to the point of being vulgar when there are so many other places that money could be better spent.
when i die, all my money goes to my local humane society

I think $10 million is a bit excessive but I do believe he should be made to care for those dogs for the rest of their lives.

I agree with this excess in this instance, because it's for more than one dog. It pays for the food, upkeep of the facility and the medications that are necessary to keep the animals healthy. It may pay for the salary of those who work there. Also, the number of dogs will vary, they may get more in.

Leona's dog is one. Who knows how long the little critter has to live.

Having raised pits for an ex-husband I know first hand the inbreeding that results in warped personalities in this breed.
I had a friend who fed and watered her husbands dogs daily as I did. She got within reach of one and it drug her in close enough to clamp down on her arm and held her for 7 hours. She lost her arm.
I could recount countless more horror stories. I do not blame the dogs. I blame the people who breed them. But they are a psychotic breed.
The money could be used for surgery for victims of pit bulls.

Nothing is too excessive for what Mr. Vick did. He is one very sick individual. He should be made to clean up after those poor dogs....they didn't deserve the treatment that he dumped on them.
