So i received a (used) air pump with air stone, rinsed it, and put it in the tank.

My problem is, the stone isn't weighted, so it keeps floating up to the surface. i've tried to weigh it with gravel, plants, and an ornament i have in there, but it wont stay down.

I dont have any large ornaments yet, so nothing is heavy enough to weigh it down.

Was there suction cups or something that was supposed to come with it? Are they available for purchase separately?

Any suggestions for the meantime? Should i just take it out?

As a matter of fact, you can buy suction cups for use with airline tubing: http://www.thatpetplace.com/pet/prod/211343/product.web

It comes in different sizes to accomodate different diameters of tubing. If your store doesn;t have these, you can take a copy of the ad in the link, and ask if they would order that for you.

For the price, you may find a different airstone (glass bead, so it weighs enough not to float) might cost less, though:

You can also get air wands with a suction cup for less: http://www.thatpetplace.com/pet/group/10445/product.web

You don't want to take the airstone out unless you also have a filter to circulate the water. With a filter, you don't need the airstone.

It's okay to leave it in even if it's floating. The bubbles disturb the surface of the water which is where a lot of the oxygen transfer occurs, so it will work almost as well even if it's not bubbling up through the water column.

well i wouldnt buy a lead weight because lead is poisonous and all but they sell seperate air stones and they sell them at walmart and you can get like two for 97 cents so their really inexpensive and easy to get but watch out when you try to take the first one off they tend to break during that proccess and then the end is really hard to get out of the tubing. good luck.

no dont take it out
odds are ur fish tank is new and half cycled if im right than this is actually still a blessing in disguise it agitates the surface letting in oxygen and helping the bacteria grow

wen i cycle a new aquarium i add deco. substrate filter air stone and zebra danios works like a charm

Do NOT use lead strips as one user suggested, as the lead will likely poison your fish.

They sell lead weights in strips that will weigh them down.
