I know Columbus thought had to convince people they could benefit by agreeing with him. The Queen of Spain supported the trip out of her selfish interests, like more money, power and profit. Somehow I believe once Columbus was given the Royal ok he knew he better produce results, or else. Columbus had to convince members of his crew to stay the course or be put to death.

The American Heritage sight cited should help.

How about when he goes to get permission from the King and Queen of Spain? Can you imagine the scene in the King's palace?

You can find out what that it was like by reading the right sections in Samuel Elliot Morrison's biography of Columbus and at wikipedia.

It would help if you read some of his entries. He has great descriptions of the natives (what they wore, the body paint), the attempts at communicating with them, the fruits they had never seen (like pineapple, mango, papaya), the tropical weather, the first time they saw people smoking. You can get some ideas there.
Remember it's a sailor's travel log, so the style is simple and matter of fact. He kept track of the time of day, for instance.
