My dad told me he would buy me an electric guitar once I learned how to play the guitar.
A year has passed and now im pretty good at it.
plus my Birthday is coming up.
He said nothing above $1000.
Can you recommend a great electric guitar that cost less than $1000?
or as cheap as they get, it is my first so I probably would damage it or something.

You have TONS of options for $1000. I suggest going around to music shops and playing as many guitars as you can get your hands on.. Keep track of the ones you like the sound and feel of. We could all tell you what we prefer and what feels right to us, but every player is different. Also, consider what kind of music you play most. Do you like a single coils or humbuckers? Here's a list of guitars that I suggest you try out:

around $400-$600. I do recommend learning to play guitar on an acoustic though. Epiphone is a great brand for both electric and acoustic. I like Ibanez and Fender for electrics though.

A Epiphone of any style is a good guitar.
Conversely, if you are a Fender fan, try Fender Squire products, you can usually acquire one for about 500-700 dollars

I have one of each of these babies.

The strat is a very versatile guitar, but can get kinda squeaky if you get the 3 single coil pick ups. I would say to get one with a humbucker in the bridge if you go that way.

Don't EVER let somebody tell you that a telecaster is for country only. I can get some great rock tones on mine and I also use it for classical stuff!
