From 1000 to 1100 AD - Merchant and craft guilds were formed to regulate the buying and selling of goods and to regulate the quality and quantity of goods produced. The guilds established the practice of indentured apprenticeship, which was both a way of life for a young person and a means of general education and preparation for skilled work.
from 1300 to 1550 AD - The Renaissance and Reformation periods of history featured the rediscovery of great literature and the formation of a new spirit of human dignity which led to geographical and scientific discovery. Firearms and cannons were invented, and great ships were built both for commerce and for war through naval power. Towns became small cities and merchant and craft guilds flourished.

The reformation happened next.
Government became more secular and took control of Guilds.

It may take some imagination but think of some professional organizations like The American Bar Association, The American Medical Association, Society of Professional Engineers, I am a member of the American Drafting and Design Association. Even trades like Welders and Steam Pipe Fitters. They have evolved.
