Remove the the green husk from the outside then place them in a wicker or bushel basket and store them in a warm place until they dry out. They will not spoil and keep them as long as you like before eating them.*

I grew up in a neighborhood that used to be an orchard and some trees were still left as street trees. A walnut with a green husk never was tasty, IMO. Squirrels would eat them green because they enjoyed also eating the bitter rind (or they were hungry), and could chew through the green shell very easily, but I wouldn't.
Wait for them to start turning brownish black, which is indeed the time they start to fall. They walnutfruits shouldn't have too much moisture left in them. Once you husk them down to the hard shell, there isn't much drying to do. Eat them right away or freeze them, although frozen nutmeats are edible they also taste kinda 'off' unless you roast them or bake them up into something.

Walnuts once they fall off the tree are dry and edible. They should be stored in the freezer. Walnut oil becomes rancid very quickly. that is why most walnuts in the store taste terrible. I learned this from a Walnut breeder.

Once you pluck the walnuts off the tree allow them to dry out.
If you would like to speed up the process incubation is always an option, but did not hear that from me.

Just wait for them to ripen like any other fruit. They have a green outer skin that you will have to peel to get to the hard walnut shell. Crack that open, and you should have a ready to eat walnut.

once the outer shell has turned black or dark brown peel it off (a real messy job, wear gloves as hands will dye). Once nut is dry crack open and take out meat keep in frig. as easily spoiled. If never tasted before you're in for a great treat. Good luck and hope you find the effort worth it all.

when the nuts start falling from the tree on their own, they are ripe...if you have to tug to get them to fall, just wait...but once they fall, get rid of the outer green portion and you will have a great treat...it's the best kind of family fun to have a "cracking" party...the shells fly all over when kids get involved, but it's a blast and then you won't be able to wait for next year's crop...
