Why not teach heavy use of mnemonics and mental math throughout grade school? I haven't a good source to tell me, but isn't there a coralation between active memory use and increased aplitude in math and increased rate of prossesing information, thus increasing learning time?
Why not teach younger students to memorize en masse for the purpose of increased mental capacity? And the data just might in use.
And ban calculators in school, and focus on mental mathematics throughout every grade?
Could we possibly even teach advanced physioarithmetic?
(means using limbs to count to high numbers and do math, thus treating the body as a really big abacus).

And why does the public school system (NC in paticular) seem to underestimate our capabilities?
Why not push us to our full potential, instead of doing just enough to get us to pass EOCs? The Early College programs try to achieve this, but they're not enough, and they only focus on high school.

I would love it if my district would provide that!

I honestly don't know much about teaching it, although I'm sure that I use it in my head quite a bit. I try to teach my students some of those tips and tricks, but unfortunately our district uses Everyday Math, which is built on a spiral system meant for math whizzes. Unfortunately my students are ELLs who are just struggling to learn the academic vocabulary of math, and the program goes way over their head.

I'm giving them addition timed tests right now, 1 minute to answer 30 problems, and it has taken 3/4 of my class 3 weeks to just pass the 1's test (1+1, 1+2, etc.).

It's sad how a district's decision is hurting our kids so much. It also stinks that their parents don't help them study. I remember doing flashcards at home w/ my mom every night when I was little.
