If Zoo...Master thinks algae are not plants then he needs to say what they are http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Algae
While never spending money on these gadgets, when younger, several times I took quart or larger glass bottles, put a couple of minnows, a small snail or two, lake water and some water weed inside and sealed them. Put in a window, algae (from the lake water and weed) grows and puts out oxygen, the snail and the fish eat the green stuff and the snails clean up after the fish. Mine worked for 6 weeks or more and I would commonly return the fish to the lake.

Here is the link for what everyone is talking about: http://www.abundantearth.com/store/ecosphere.html It IS called an EcoSphere and it is mainly self-contained. It's very interesting to read about, although I don't know if I'd get one. This again is a "Personal Opinion" type of thing. You don't have to like it, and if you don't, don't get one. However, if you do like it, get one. You say ta-ma-to, I say Toh-mae-toe type of thing, it doesn't mean anyone is right or anyone is wrong. We're all entitled to our opinions, that's what makes the USA so wonderful!! I hope this helps! Good luck. ;o)

yes its called bio-orb and the creatures are hawaiin red shrimp it is supposedly self sufficient and never needs cleaning (then again so was betta in a jar) the most i have heard of is them living 5 years, and dont buy it if you have kids they shake the shrimp and that puts stress on the shrimp also it says never move it.

yes, my in-laws had one for about 10 years but when they got dogs one of them got up on the counter and knocked it off. i think sleeper_grrl is right that they are called eco spheres. my in-laws had some friends that had one for 20 years so it can be done. the ball do have a plant in them that contributes oxygen so don't listen to those who say differently.

ZooTycoonMaster is correct. I strongly suggest NOT buying one though. How cruel! It's like putting you in a sphere for all your life. No oxgyen source, no food source, no clean water source, and more. How sad.

If you are thinking about getting it, I would suggest not to. The shrimp need oxygen to survive, and the glass ball won't provide it.
EDIT: Algae is not a plant, so it will not make oxygen.
