Consider all of these answers from these guys here. they have listed all the best metalheads in the universe. these people really knows their music and really knows how ROCK. GOOD WORK GUYS! here's my own opinion. Anything between Black Sabbath and the newest band that has just signed up 10 seconds ago are all the best! and you know why? Because Heavy Metal Rules! yeah, baby! from the major genre down to the last sub-genre you can find! \m/ rock on!

TRUST ME. Opeth, Atheist, Cynic, Progressive Death FTW!
Um, Symphony X, Wintersun, Death. All these bands were or are all fronted by
geniuses
Edit: If you haven't had any metal exposure, the old bands the first person listed would probably be better to start from.
The bands I listed are very diverse and all have great compositions.
Metallica and most of the other 80's thrash bands are overrated in my opinion, so don't get too stuck with them

Thats a broad question. first of all are u looking for music from the past to supply you with new music? thats what Im leaning towrds.2nd what is your def. of metal bands?
Pantera, Slayer? I would recomend this....Lynard Skinard is obvios.Go find a band called Rush and by a cd called all the worlds a stage. Now that album represents metal at its best. Go find areosmith and an album called live bootleg. I promise you...promise you there is no better metal anywhere at anytime on anyday of the week.
