Read the chapter this question came from. The answer is there. I forgot too much since I sold my accounting books.

My guess goes as follows:
Net assets on 1-1-2007 = 34,000 - 21,500 = 12,500
Net assets on 12-31-2007 - 40,000 - 26,00 = 13,500
Net increase in assets = 13,500 - 12,500 - 1,000

Net owner withdraw = 2,000 - 1,400 = 600

Net income must account for both.
Net income = 1000 + 600 = 1,600.
