Does Dell Inspiron 9100 laptop bought in 2004 takes what kind of hard drive, SATA or PATA?

Most laptop/notebook drives are still PATA, also known as regular old ATA or EIDE... Certainly true of machines 3 years old.

Your dell inspiron 9100 takes the IDE connection hard drive. That is the standard ata gray cable. ATA hard drives are the most common hard drives in the market so if you just go into a computer retail store (like compusa, best buy, circuit city) and ask for it they should have plenty of them.

Just guessing, but almost certainly PATA.

Can you open up the laptop and check the drive itself ... especially the connector?
