In phenomenology, thinking can be described as subvocal communication. That is to say, that when we think we use language and speak internally. The duality that is experienced through the linguistic ability of "splitting" such as "I was thinking to myself" or "I was saying to myself."

As to the origins: When we learn language, we are conditioned to watch what we say socially and then find ourselves in situations where we are required to suppress the desire to say certain things. These items that we wish to say aloud become suppressed speech or thought. You may have been scolded or punished for making certain comments and statements publicly. Further, as we learn language and begin to read, we read aloud. As we age, we are then taught to read "silently" and suppress the tendency to speak what we read and convert it to subvocal communication.

Critical thinking is different in this is a particular analysis technique that we might use we discussing/thinking about any subject matter.
