I agree that reading is one of your best bets. Study the syntax of a writer you think is particularly good. You can also find writing advice and information at places like http://peacecorpswriters.org/pages/depts/resources/resour_writers/100daysbook/bk100da.html or http://www.writingclasses.com/ or any number of other sites.
You could also read a book or two about writing such as A Guide to Fiction Writing by Phyllis A. Whitney, How to Tell a Story and Other Essays by Mark Twain or Fine Print by James Kilpatrick. They are each very good.
There's also a small book "cube" called Writer's Block: Ideas to Jump-Start Your Imagination by Jason Rekulak which is a little treasure. (You can find it at Amazon.com.) It has suggestions and ideas you can use to exercise your writing. It gives you an idea and you, in turn, write a short story about that particular thing. It also includes some authors' insights and tips. This book is a lot of fun!
Whatever you decide upon, enjoy yourself while writing about something you like. A writer who is bored with his own story is a poor storyteller.

To borrow from Stephen King - become a great reader. You must be a great reader to be a great author. Also join some writers group - preferably a face to face one. Libraries have them. So do major bookstores. For free. Join online groups and discuss writing but please do not post your work. The internet and those sites in particular are playgrounds for plagiarists. If someone you don't know suddenly offers to read for you or help you, politely beg off unless you are sure you can trust them. Absolute Write is a good forum to discuss, but no posting!! Also Google around for some free writing classes. Unfortunately Barnes and Noble University closed down. They are now just book discussion groups. I am planning on opening my Book Boot Camp really soon. Watch for it. Pax= C
PS I star great Q and A concerning writing and publishing here. Feel free to go to my profile and check them out. You can print them out to study them. A lot of kids are making their own books from the answers people give. If you add me as a fan you will get regular updates when I star new questions.

Promise your self to place in writing a definite volume of time common. build on your vocabulary by analyzing a dictionary. in case you get author's block, then take a stroll around you community or to the park. save your eyes peeled for concept. submit a number of your thoughts on the internet and characteristic a number of you pals furnish you with comments. in no way provide up. If somebody tells you that your tale is undesirable, don't be discouraged. All large writers have been as quickly as no longer-so-large. good success at the same time with your writing.

Write. Let yourself be more creative and free. Don't think about what other people will think, just be yourself.
