I am with Bank of America. I closed it today. One woman told me it will take up to 30 days whereas another rep told me it only takes 24 hours. I'm closing it because money has been debited from my account without my authorization twice now.

If there were no transactions pending in the account today then it will close today if they did it correctly. If there were transactions today then it should close Monday. What you need to do is open a new account and submit an account compromise form, this will allow any outstanding checks to clear through the new account once you have provided the check number, who it's payable to, and the amount. After your outstanding checks have cleared then you will need to tell them to close the account. The account compromise form will restrict the account to only accept the checks you have listed. If you have no outstanding checks or transactions then the account can be closed immediately.

At my bank, the would be officially closed as of close of business today. Any outstanding checks you did not report when you closed the account would be returned unpaid.

It will officially close when the last check written has cleared. It can be closed to ATM transactions/withdrawals immediately. Talk to your branch manager and have that done and understood.

24 hours seems more likely. I don't know why it would take 30 days.

To make sure, I suggest calling and getting clarification.

they should not accept any checks after you notified them to close the account -== if you have a written record hang on to it -- just hope all of your outstanding checks had cleared!!!
