Most places, you don't, provided you
are building for yourself and not someone else.
You WILL need approved plans, and a building
permit, and all sorts of local inspections etc.,
that are hard to come by if you don't know the
ropes and the local cast of players.

If your building your own home in Texas, go to the local city hall, get permits, they are cheap. You can build your own home without a contractors license, but you have to have permits to do it. If your considering building houses, for sale or some one else, yes, you will need a contractors license, liability insurance and many different license.
