what is the paradigm that allows this? i could think about it for awhile, but I'll leave that to you

is it just coincidence?

and wouldnt it be fun if all the people who tried to gain weight (young men) could trade places with all those who were trying to lose it (older women), btw as an aside, how do you explain that? whats with these coincidences!?

tony - good thought, though how warped do you have to be if youre a woman who weighs 80 lbs and thinks youre obese, is it really that simple? the fear of obesity?

another opposition is, fat people are always an easy target for jokes, but as more and more people do get overweight, they will become the norm and hence not so persecuted perhaps? so then would we see a fall in anorexia and bulemia? or will it remain a niche of high privileged society?

then you can imagine a socialist revolt featuring an army of burger wielding beer bellies

Girls who suffer from eating disorders are trying hard to not be obese. They are revolted by the sight of obesity. The more obese people are, the more a girl feels revolted and compelled to develop eating disorders.

It is more of an economic issue than it is anything else. Most of the obese are in the lower income brackets, while people with anorexia tend to be in the higher income brackets. Why? Because poor people make poor food choices because those options are cheaper. It used to be that fat was a sign of wealth. Now thin is a sign of wealth. Thus, we now have two "diseases" that are related directly to economics. There are exceptions, obviously, but generally, weight tends to break down by income level.

Both conditions come from being an advanced nation.having everything at your disposal so that you dont have to work ( work as in work i other parts of the world).Having more time money and facilities at your disposal means an idle mind not knowing what yto do.
This will lead to over eating when too much is available and u dont know where to stop or spemdimg time and effort to bee ultra thin to show off ! and fit into some mental mould.
In the end bith are diseases of excesses and not being aware.

I'm not surprised that both ends of the spectrum exist in the same place because it's indicative of our culture which dictates via advertising, how we're to live our lives and what we're to think about. If you watch TV objectively, you'll notice most of the ads are about either exercise equipment or food (including the appliances to prepare food). Second to that, are ads for cars and ads for restaurants (how convenient is that?). Is it possible for those of us in the US NOT to be schizophrenic about food?

While standing in the checkout line at any grocery store USA, guess what plasters the covers of almost all the glossy mags? Pictures of food - or pictures of wafer thin models.

It's all about money honey - it always is.

Bulimia and Anorexia are medical conditions and bear little relationship to whichever country invented the names.

The argument is spurious and not coincidental.

Or......you could ask yourself which country has the greater financial gain in naming the diseases.

this country is the most obsessive country in the world...that's why everything exists in this country to the extreme...everything
this country is also the one that is splattered with images everywhere, of sickly thin women who are so-called supermodels, which is what we women are subjected to since childhood...
in Latin American countries, women are expected to be curvacious, if not a little on the heavy side
