Humour is often responded to based on nonverbal communication information. If someone isn't familiar with you, they aren't likely to catch the nuances that would likely have them busting a gut.
My philosophy is that we are only misunderstood to the extent that we attempt to confuse others.
One person that I thought of in my life when I read your question spends so much time trying for the clever comeback that most people are into the next thought and his humour is out of sync with what he is attempting.
I think that is a reason for emoticons becoming widespread across the internet.

Different things appeal to different people. I have a dry sense of humor, usually what I find quite amusing, others don't.
It is always wise to respect others when it comes to humor, it is a part of our whole that makes us special and unique individuals.
