I am just wondering how many hours after the kids go home from school would the teacher in their very first year (primary teacher) expect to stay back and what would be the specific reasons for staying back?

Quite a bit. I am a second year teacher but new to my grade. I usually stay at least till 4:30.

I think simply getting into a routine is the hard part of planing and keeping the classroom kept up. Plus there are the zillions of meetings and surprises through out the day that eat away at your plan time. As an elementary teacher you basically cater to every need of every child. Even if each child only has 1 need, that 18-25 needs. Parents add to that. Of course none of this includes lesson plans that bomb and have to be reworked, interruptions, discipline difficulties, communicating with other teachers, etc.
