It shapes their attitudes towards things. Many gay children born to ultra-conservative families have an extremely difficult time coming to terms with their sexuality, and a lot of them end up trying to commit suicide (many unfortunately succeed) because they were raised to believe that they are wrong by feeling the way they do, yet they can't do anything to change it so they figure the only way out is death.

I don't think culture has anything to do with shaping what gender the child will be attracted to, it will just shape the way they feel about themselves and how easy or hard they will find it to accept who and what they are, and/or other people who are gay.
