Here are the basic steps:
1) 2-4 years of undergrad
2) 3-4 years of pharmacy school
3) take test and get licensed
4) congrats you are a pharmacist

Well, the previous posters that I have read are wrong.
All Pharmacists must complete a college education. The friend referred to probably is a Pharmacy Technician...which is WAY different than a Pharmacist.
Pharmacy Schools require 2-3 years of prerequisite work, plus 3-4 years of Pharmacy School. Most schools in the country are 4 years, but there are some that go 3 years of year round school.
Before a Pharm. D. was required to practice as a Pharmacist, Pharmacy School was a Bachelor's level education. If you had a Bachelor of Pharmacy degree, you could be a Pharmacist. This is still the case in most countries outside the US.

there must be several different kinds of pharmacists in the US - i have a friend who works as a pharmacist for a large drug store, he didn't even finish a 4 year degree.

You need a Chemistry or Bio Degree, a biochemistry degree would be the best. after you need to go to pharmacy school.
