Yes, but technically speaking what they do is known as airborne waddling.

Hello Hockey Fan,
How did YOU know about the penguins???
You must be enlightened, as I am.
I live on the 26th floor of a highrise building & have large picture windows. Well, we only have this for one more month. You see, I cannot work because I am disabled by a terminal illness (even though I am young). Soooo, my husband cannot work because he has to take care of me 24/7. Well, we have run totally out of money & will be moving to a 5th floor apartment with windows that look out onto a brick window.
Anyway, I digress...penguins. Yes, these are the Emperor Penguins that have the ability to fly. I work at my laptop, which is on a tray on my bed. The window is to my side. As huge as the window is, the penguins KNOW when I am looking & wait. When I turn back to my laptop, they fly right past me!!
I will see them out of the corner of my eye, but I never can catch them. I KNOW they are the penguins, but I must not be allowed to see them yet. I am not worthy :(
Do you know why they fly?? They fly when they have reached Nirvana (not the band).
Maybe my husband will paint penguins on the brick wall across from our "new" apartment. I probably won't see them either when I look. :o
Peace and Penguins to you, Hockey Fan.

Of course we will never really know for sure because we aren't looking at them when they fly, "if they fly." Sort of like "if a tree falls down when no one is around, does it make a sound?"
Now, that we got the fact of never knowing for sure out of the way, ask your self another question "Why would penguins only fly when no one is looking?" "Why would a tree only make a sound if people are near to hear it?"
The answer is that it wouldn't, not only is it illogical, but quite frankly there is no purpose for them to do such things. If they wanted to fly, they would have done so when sharks came to eat them...

I have a feeling a lot of things go on when I'm not looking- so it won't surprise me if penguins could fly!

Penguins cannot fly, they are too heavy, but they can swim real fast, so I guess they might look like they are Flying.

The difficulty for them is that they have to fly back to the same place they would have been, if they couldn't fly, before you turn around again. That means they not only have to fly fast, they have to be really good at knowing when you will turn your head.
If I keep going like this, I will invent a new religion of the Frost and create Ice, the fading, yet fierce, God of the North and South and people will give me lots of donations.

haha...that would be kool! But no.They bodies aren't designed to fly,and it is evident by just looking at them. They are extremely good swimmers, and they can dive just as many feet as any bird could fly.I love penguins..
Have you seen Happy feet, march of the penguins, and surf's up? they are really good.haha.
hope this helps..or just entertains you..haha =)

This video link below might have you thinking they do.
I'm reminded of the Far Side comic where all the cows are standing in the field and one yells "Car" followed by the next panel with all the cows grazing as the car passes.
