In late August I submitted my letter of resignation, because I wanted to pursue different career options. Originally my last day would have been today. However, last thursday the city manager asked if I wanted to transfer to a different department which better utilized my skills, so I said I would.

I submitted my request and interviewed for the position. After my interview I sent another memo stating that should my transfer not be succusful that I would extend my last day until 9/28/07. I just learned that my request has been denied, without being given a reason, plus the job posting for my current postion is being advertised. What does this mean.

It means that they valued you and wanted to keep you, but that you indicated you would still be unhappy and leaving by the end of the month.

They want both jobs to be filled by someone who is enthusiastic and looking forward to staying on in the long term.

I guess the only question remaining is whether you are expected to show up Monday in the new position, or whether you are now unemployed as a result of your resignation from your old job and your failure to accept the new one on the terms offered.

Obviously, written communications have failed you here. Get someone on the phone, or see them in person and clarify the situation.
