My 2002 Dodge Dakota 4x4 quit working today. I was driving and and all of the sudden it just quit going. I have all of my forward gears aren't working, but reverse still does. I looked at my transmission and I can see it switching when I pull the lever(it is an automatic) but its like it doesn't catch. Anybody have any ideas of where to look or what could be wrong. I really don't want to take it to the shop if it is just something simple. THanks in advance

Your reverse gear is not dependant on your forward gears as it has its own band the first thing to check is pull the transmission dipstick and determine if you have transmission fluid and what the color and smells are present. If it has fluid is the color reddish or brown?. Does it have very little smell or smell burnt or hot ?.if you are low on fluid, there are markings on the stick. you should add transmission fluid. If you have fluid but its brown or burnt smelling you have transmission failure. Your best bet is to get an inspection from a transmission shop. You might have to pay, but if you need it repaired they take it off the bill. Good luck
