I loved the Ted Mack Amateur Hour. I specifically remember a little girl that tap danced upside down holding on to a huge metal hoop-thing with a wooden "dance floor" attached at the top. I thought she was wonderful and was secretly envious of her. Hum...I wonder where she is today, lol.

And yea verily before Ted Mack on the TV, there was Major Bowes Amateur Hour on the radio! We watched Ted Mack, along with Lawrence [uh-one, uh-two] Welk too...in the northern Wisconsin culture then, Welk was definitely one of Our People [remember my Pa-in-law saying fondly, "He talks chust like US"]. Godfrey's sponsor was Lipton chicken noodle soup, which the red-headed goofed off on in a famous statement--"there isn't any chicken in it!". Right, there wasn't...the sponsor's booth steamed at that one. Wayne Newton was an early phenom, but most of the listeners/watchers in our part of the country lumped him in with Liberace...a kind of glittering freak that attracted the blue hair ladies. Ol' Wayne outlived all of 'em--and we've all lived long enuf to see him in the same show-biz pantheon as the other Las Vegas crowd-pullers.

I remember the Ted Mack Original Amateur Hour but seldom watched it since most of the stuff on there was so pathetic it was unbelievable.

I also remember Arthur Godrey the red headed guy who played his ukulele (sp) and was always talking about Hawaii. That was way before Hawaii was a state.

I remember watching the Amateur Hour - I even remember hearing Wayne Newton when he was first on it, back before he was Mr. Las Vegas. I was young enough that I think I was totally puzzled by what I perceived as a woman's voice coming out of a guy!

I remember when the Smothers Brothers were on the Amateur hour, but one was sick, so one did the comedy. I don't remember which one. I remember Arthur Godfrey, too. I remember the House Party, and Jack Benny.

Yes, I remember staying up to watch those shows. When I try to tell my nephews and nieces how big our TV was they think I am lying. I also told them originally we only got two, then three stations and this was in Los Angeles. Great time to be alive though. Kukla, Fran and Ollie were great, weren't they Beanie boy! How about Crusader Rabbitt and Rags the Tiger?
