Upside: You meet a lot of people. It's very cozy because your friends are just down the hall whenever you want to visit. You don't have to cook. You don't have to worry about water, electric, or heating bills. Just crank the AC up as much as you want and it all costs the same. Campus is very close, no long, tiring commutes. You don't have to clean the bathroom.
Downsides: If you don't like your roommate it can really suck. Room with someone you know if you can.
If there's a lot of yahoo's on your floor you may loose some sleep when they're partying and you want to sleep. This is less of a problem at the fancy schools.
You get kicked out for holidays. This is not a problem for most, but for some who have no where to go it can be an issue.
The food in the dorms is mediocre. If your picky about your diet this could be an issue.

The only thing I've found "awesome" is having a lot of people around to meet, but now that I have my group of friends I don't think it's all that awesome to live in an 11x15 cell and share a bathroom with 20 people, hahaha. I'll definitely be opting for an apartment next year, but I think that living in the dorms is a great experience for Freshman because you get to meet so many other people from such diverse backgrounds. Also, lots of dorms have social activities and free food and stuff, which is always a plus =)

Staying at a dorm gives you the freedom to do what you want and make your own choices. You meet many friends and can party or just hang out with the people you have the most in common with. good and bad to living in dorms. Bad for example-a smelly, dirty roommate or sharing bathrooms. Good-always others around to have fun with, study with, drink with or chill with..NO PARENTS:)

Some love it, Some hate it. It is very small but if you have a good room mate then it will be a great year for you. But if you are in your first year of college, I would get an appartment next year cuz thats when the fun begins

The experience of living with other people you have never met in a small room. It's a traditional college experience.
