Of course- one of my best friends is a staunch Republican. We've even gone to blows over our politics after too many drinks, but when push comes to shove he's a brother to me and I'd go to hell to defend him.

The only rule about sharing foxholes is never to share one with someone braver than yourself.
And yes, you defend the other person with your life and count on them to do the same. No matter what they happen to believe. Debate and argument in the barracks means nothing when things start blowing up. That's the great thing about the military: you'll see blacks, whites, hispanics, catholics, jews, and whatever all working together as part of a team to accomplish a mission. The military truly is the last great melting pot in American society.

If I were in a foxhole in Iraq I wouldn't care in the least who was in there with me because I'd be too busy trying to figure a way out of the foxhole and out of the country. I have no interest whatsoever in dying for Dick Cheney and Halliburton.

You bet. Political philosophy wouldn't enter into it. That's like asking a Catholic if he would defend a Protestant under those identical circumstances or for that matter, an atheist.
