Yepp.. That was very wrong. =S

You should NEVER put two fighting fish together, they will almost always kill eachother. Although they may be gentle, they're not towards other fish. Sorry for the loss of your fighter.

I also made the same mistake but with a goldfish. I was a lot younger at the time and I didnt know why this would happen but the name pretty much tells all.I have a fighting fish here a work and when I go to feed him he flares up and his color goes darker than normal.

Fighting fish should really be in sperate bowls. They do live in the wild together but they have so much more room so they dont fight as often. Both male and female fighting fish will flare the gills to look more impressive, either to intimidate other fish or as an act of courtship. They also like to protect their territory. Fighting fish can be in with certain fish. Common tankmates include mollies, catfish, loaches or Amano Shrimp. They also like to hide in plants and other types of coverings so if there was not where to hide for the fish they will fight for their territory.

Two Males: Usually will end up in one fish dying.
Male and Female: Male fighting fish are to aggressive and will harm the female unless they mate. Usually they will make a spot for them to mate and a spot for the female to leave where the males cannot go so the male cannot attack them.
Females: 2 females cannot be in the same tank together one female will bully the other but if you stick 3 or more then there wont be as much bullying.

you need a very large tank to do any of these. I would just advise that you dont stick any fighting fish together to avoid death of another fish.

I have a question, how do you raise a fish to be gentle? Thats impossible. Its not that they are mean fish, the are territorial towards their own species, male or female (unless breeding). You can keep them with other fish in a tank with no problem, just don't ever put them with each other. They don't need companions. They don't want companions.

They're called "Siamese Fighting Fish" for a reason.. You should never put two males together because males will attack their kind and anything that looks similar to them. In the wild, they will fight until one feels he can no longer keep up with the other male and will retreat. This, however, is not the same when kept in tanks because they have no where to swim away to. Other than that bettas can get along fine with other peaceful fish.

You can never have more than one male fighting fish in a tank or bowl. One will eventually kill the other. However, you can have a male and female. Sorry for the bad news.

Fighting fish are not good together whats so ever. I had my beta in an aquarium with 6 goldfish and nothing happened, but some agressive fish have to be in a tank with another that can stand its own , but i would think yes it was a bad idea. You should probably put them in seperate tanks.

Fighting Fish have an instict to fight each other they must always be solo. You can not even put them in bowls next to each other because they will constantley hit the glass. Its a natural instinct.

Next time, consider getting "Kissing Fish", instead
(see the links below).

And, for those who are not just jerking us around,
always research the kinds of fish you intend on getting,
and don't be afraid to ask the aquarium retailer
for assistance.

BTW, male and female fighting fish
don't always get along, either.

Their fighting fish. It's in the name. Even though you raised them to be nice and gentle, it's in their blood to fight. It's just like people, we're all born knowing how to hate, even though one is raised to love, it still has it in their blood to hate. Hope that made it clearer!

Yeah, they will kill each other. You can't raise them to be gentle. Even the females need a larger tank and at least five total to not attack each other.
