I had a debate in high school in the '80's about this very thing. My how times don't change much. The essence of the debate is simple ( Those who do drugs want it legal, those that don't won't allow it). The answer 2 fold. Give all people a reason to legalize drugs in a viable way that helps everyone such as government subsidized and no income tax), and the realization that not everyone will do drugs regardless of legalization.
I think legalization of drugs would do a lot for everyone. It would cut down on drug wars within the US, and make it less taboo (interesting) for the majority. Also, over time less drug addicts will be around, because the incautious are dead and the rest decided it wasn't worth the hype.

Okay here's the real deal, Babylon Shitstem doesn't want to legalize marijuana,is simply because it can't be taxed. Everyone will start to grow their own herb, and Government wouldn't have any means by which they can obtain a profit from this. Marijuana will NOTsend you insane, neither is it a drug. I am a chronic marijuana smoker for the past 16 years, and I maintain an excellent job, two beautiful daughters, the whole works, it has never kept me back.

Hmmm..... The 3 things you have established are true enough BUT what about the huge mental health link to depression and Alzheimer's and other disorders?
If legalising Dope meant that more people would use what is currently out on the streets then that is bad. Especially if more people become addicted.
BUT if it can be grown by a particular group who can possibly be able to keep a check on THC levels etc.. and people become informed users maybe it is not such a bad idea. So I guess if it is regulated it may infact allow us to step forward with the issues we have with it.

The big question is, would we *really* be worse off if it were legalized? The main difference would be that different people would make money off of it. Considering that a lot of people have access to it anyway, it seems like we'd all be better off taxing the stuff.

Yes Legalize it. The plant fiber makes a great textile product.
The government could get on to attacking the real problem substances like cocaine, heroin and meth. They wouldn't be wasting resources on marijuana.
I just can't see how anyone likes smoking it though.
