A truly scary read was the supposedly true story (that reads like a novel) The Amityville Horror by Jay Hanson. I'd also suggest Stephen King (especially The Dark Towers series-The Gunslinger; The Drawing of the Three; The Waste Lands; Wizard and Glass; Wolves of the Calla; Song of Susannah) and Dean Koontz (especially Odd Thomas, Forever Odd and Brother Odd).

There is also The Omen by David Seltzer and The Exorcist by William Peter Blatty.

The Turn of the Screw by Henry James is really creepy. I forgot to mention The Stand by Stephen King.

Even though they aren't ghost stories, these are books that can give you the shudders: Dracula by Bram Stoker; Frankenstein by Mary Shelley; The Phantom of the Opera by Gaston Leroux.

For a lot of chills, you can't go wrong reading one of Frank Peretti's novels: Monster; This Present Darkness; Piercing the Darkness; House (with Ted Dekker); The Visitation; The Oath; The Prophet; The Veritas Project books-Hangman's Curse & Nightmare Academy.

Another option is a collection of stories like Classic Ghost Stories: Eighteen Spine-Chilling Tales of Terror and the Supernatural compiled by Bill Bowers.

Your sister might also appreciate Edgar Allan Poe. His stories and poems are scary/creepy/chilling. His story The Fall of the House of Usher was so scary (even in the movie version) that I wasn't allowed to watch it until I was an adult! The Tell-Tale Heart is another frightening one. The Raven is a good poem, too.

I hope you find something your sister will like.

I read a book a few months ago called Heart Shaped Box. It was a scary book, but not because of monsters and gore. It was a book with an errie feeling to it. I enjoyed it. Hope this helps.

Perhaps this website will help.

My favorite is the Canterville Ghost but that is a funny ghost story, not a scary one.

Maybe goosebumps books by R.L Stine.I have read most of them and even though people say that they are scary they aren't scary at all.
