hi there, i work at costco two days a week. Ive been working there for over a year now as a cashier. I am one of the best cashiers the store has got. However today i got two letter for a meeting. One letter was for a meeting on sunday for my excessive latenesses (3days in a month) and the other meeting is on monday for absenteeism. I had three lates in one month each late day after the other due to my vehcile having problems and the other was due to an road traffic accident. I rung in and notified my work place for all three lates that month and telling them the reason regarding why i was late. Do i have an arggument with my work place that i could throw at them ? plus the abseentism bit is where i have had 6 illneses in one year. However the recent three ilnesses are due to me being on an antiobiotic called roaccutane which gave me bad side affects, ie back ache, headahces and so on. where do i stand with my work ? what kind argument can i put against them, plus could they sack me ?

Look in your employee hand book about your concerns and read the policies that pertain to you. With the illness I would get a letter from your doctor explaining your condition. Now about being late, if you called in before your start time you may have a case. If you call in before the time you are to start you are letting them know there is a problem and you will be there. I see the problem is being late and it is up to you to give yourself enough time to get to work no matter what. They might have enough to fire you about the tardiness. When you go to your meeting have all of your facts straight and explain each in detail and tell them you will never let it happen again. Good luck and take care.

Advise from an old retired manager.....better straighten up and start flying right. Yes they could sack you. It appears that you have loads of excuses for not being at work on time and quite frankly that is your responsibility not COSCO's.

If you are interested in your job start paying attention to what your employer would like for you to do. If you do not need your job then just keep doing what you have been doing and being the best cashier in the store will simply not count for anything in the unemployment line.

This may vary from state to state. In a state where employment is at-will (Ohio and California are two), your employer does not need ANY reason to fire you. He can fire you for wearing orange if he hates orange.

If you have a union, you may have some ability to file a grievance. Otherwise, you just need to grin and bear it. Leve early in case there is traffic. Show up when you feel crappy and let them send you home.

If you state is not at-will, you may have some rights, but it sound like you were written up for legitimate things. Sorry.

get a doctor's note for the sick days, there is nothing they can do about that.

and i would just try to explain to them that your vehicle was not a planned absence/late notice, it's just you could not help it. as far as what they will say to you- they will probably either say leave earlier for work or just talk to you.

they probably won't fire you.
hopefully.

good luck
