Its depends on what you want to do with it.Do some research on the net, read the pro and cons of all the brands etc.
I have had several computer brands over the years, including one that was built to my specifications and never had any major problems with any, most of the problems I had was a result in my lack of knowledge in using a computer.
Decide what you want a computer for then shop around for the best deal you can get, including after sale backup and warrantry.Ultimately,in the end its your choice.
There are some very good computer companies such as Dell,HP,HP Compaq Presario,Acer just to name a few.
Remember though that the more expensive ones do not always come off as the best.

One that has what I need (and no more), made by a reputable manufacturer with a history of good support. I picked up a Toshiba laptop a month ago on a weekend sale and it works beautifully. Has an 80gb HD and 512mb RAM which is sufficient for my needs. You may or may not want more.
Just keep a good record of your sales slip, order number, customer number, serial number, etc. in case you have to call for support. I usually write this on the front page of the User's Guide and keep it and a copy of the registration in a Word document.

Apple Definetly. It IS probably the most expensive, but it is worth it. Some come with a video camera, and you can get what I call 'PC mode' where you can make it work just like a PC.
