hi there, i work at costco two days a week. Ive been working there for over a year now as a cashier. I am one of the best cashiers the store has got. However today i got two letter for a meeting. One letter was for a meeting on sunday for my excessive latenesses (3days in a month) and the other meeting is on monday for absenteeism. I had three lates in one month each late day after the other due to my vehcile having problems and the other was due to an road traffic accident. I rung in and notified my work place for all three lates that month and telling them the reason regarding why i was late. Do i have an arggument with my work place that i could throw at them ? plus the abseentism bit is where i have had 6 illneses in one year. However the recent three ilnesses are due to me being on an antiobiotic called roaccutane which gave me bad side affects, ie back ache, headahces and so on. where do i stand with my work ? what kind argument can i put against them, plus could they sack me ?

Can they fire you? Yes. You aren't contractually bound to them, and they aren't contractually bound to you. They can fire you at any time, for any reason. Try to remember that your personal problems are not the concern of your employer. They have hired you to fill a position. If you can't consistently fufill the requirements of your job (and showing up is a very important requirement to complete your job duties!), they are well within thier rights to find someone who can.

I'd suggest going to your doctor that put you on the medication and get a doctor's note. Im not sure what state you are in, but here in California you can get FMLA (Family Medical Leave Act) from your primary care doctor and take that into your employer and there are laws that make it impossible for them to fire you based on any illness related absences.

Like other people have said, just make sure you can get supporting documentation of the days that you were late/absent when you go into the meetings, just to have all your ducks in a row.

Yes, they can discharge you.

Your illnesses do not rise to the level of being a disability, so you have no protection for that.

If you are one of their best cashiers, they've got a reason for wanting to keep you. If you can convince them that you have solved your problems, and you will reliably be at work when you are scheduled to work, they'll give you another chance.

Don't argue with them. That makes them your opponent. You don't need opponents, you need allies. Ask them what you need to do to keep your job. It's hard to be nasty to someone who is asking for help.

They may just be following company SOP's. Bring a clip from the newspaper about the accident or anything else you have to support your case.

The bottom line is if you work in what is known as an at will state, then your employer can fire you at any time, without cause.

Any at-will state a company can fire you for any reason. The purpose of the meetings is to document the reason they are going to fire you so they are validated and make it tough for you to collect unemployment...

Sorry.

Yes they can sack you and probably will. You Have shown you are unreliable. It doesn't matter if you are the best if they can't count on you.
