No That isn't fair, if he is having a hard time reading it, she should make him re-write it. And if writes differently from the way she would like him to, she should show him how she wants it done and then let him practice it a while before she starts marking it wrong.
Talk to the principal about it

Actually I kinda agree with the teacher. Although I think she is not getting her mesage across. At my University you will actually not have your worked marked if its messy handwriting.
Now I know third grade and University can't compare but what most people don't understand is that the way most people write in these grades are the way you will write for life.
You should speak to his teacher and see if thats the reason. Also maybe buying an extra work book to practice handwriting.
Note: I can't believe they don't TEACH handwriting. What has this world come to.

What is your son's teacher's justification for taking off the points? Has the teacher made it clear from the get-go that points will be taken off for this reason? Also, what are the teacher's justifications for taking the points off? For example, is it because she or he can't read your son's handwriting? Under what circumstances is the teacher docking your son points in this regard? I know that when it comes to the Florida Writes and the Escambia Writes, nothing will be graded that falls outside of the lines on the paper the students are given to write their essays. So, perhaps the teacher is docking your son points for writing outside of the lines and for not staying on the lines.
That saddens and bothers me that your son's school doesn't teaching writing/penmanship.

You need to talk to the teacher. Maybe this school had a great writing program in grade 2 and this teacher doesn't know he was never taught. If this is a testing year and writing outside the lines will result in a lower mark on THE test, she is right to teach them what they need to know. Also, make sure she hasn't tried to teach them. Sometimes it is done for 10 minutes or so every morning but you don't see the book at home.
He will need to learn to write so get him a book and work on it.

I don't think that is right, for a teacher to take credit of your son's paper because of his handwriting. If other associates and teachers can read and understand the student's work, than nothing is wrong with his writing. If it needs work, then do some individual practice at home because all the writing has to be is neat, but taking points off is wrong.

Okay. We have to stop and think about this here. Your son is in third grades. What grades he gets here will not affect anything down the road. Its not like he is going for his Doctorate. Whether or not it should be done, the teacher is hoping that it might inspire him to work harder to write neater and that WILL have an effect later on in life.

You bet they can. My wife is a teacher and if she can't read the answer then it is automatically wrong. If I were you I would work with your child and help him improve his writing skills. And as for is that fair? Fair is where you buy cotton candy and pay somebody to make you puke it back up.

Yeah that seems a little hypocritical to me, when he isn't even learning handwriting, and esp. since it's not taught, there's no way for him to learn any better. I would say something to the teacher.
