Something has happened to the ignition system or the timing chain. It is out of time and the fuel in the cylinder is igniting while the intake valves are open hence the flames.

Most likely the timing chain has jumped, esp. if it has high miles.

One- Do not drive till you find out what's going on.

Two- the problem is a backfire that is igniting the fuel in the Intake manifold.

Three the only thing that can cause this type of backfire is your Timing. Most likely they moved you Dist. while working on the Trans or have Crossed wired at least two plugs.

Four- Yor enging has Jumped time .

examine your engine timing. The engine may well be decrease back firing by way of timing being retarded. If it is going to fairly run after backfiring your timing chain/belt would have shifted a tooth. this would ensue if the chain/belt is loose by way of age or a nasty loafer pully. If this takes place basically on a rapid restart you have a clogged catalytic converter. which will additionally rob you of skill at highway velocity.

Call "pick-your-part" recyclers and have this thing hauled off before it lights your house on fire.

If it HAS jumped time, the engine is mostly worn out and a caddy that old ain't worth fixing up (in my opinion)
